How the math works
Fee on a charge
Multiply the charge by the percentage, then add the fixed fee. What is left is your net payout.
fee = amount times 2.9% plus $0.30
net = amount minus fee
Example: a $100 charge costs $3.20, so you keep $96.80.
Gross up to a target
To land on a target payout after fees, divide the target plus the fixed fee by one minus the percentage.
charge = (target plus $0.30) / (1 minus 2.9%)
Example: to keep $100, charge about $103.30.
Frequently asked questions
How much does Stripe charge per transaction?
Stripe's standard US pricing for online card payments is 2.9% of the charge plus a fixed $0.30 per successful charge. On a $100 charge that is $3.20 in fees, leaving you $96.80. Your actual rate can differ by country, card type, and Stripe plan, so check Stripe's pricing page for the number that applies to your account.
How do I calculate the Stripe fee on a payment?
Multiply the charge amount by the percentage rate, then add the fixed fee. With Stripe's standard 2.9% plus $0.30, a $50 charge costs 50 times 0.029 ($1.45) plus $0.30, which is $1.75 total, so you keep $48.25. The calculator on this page does this for any amount and lets you change the rate.
How do I work out what to charge to receive a specific amount?
This is called grossing up. To net a target payout after fees, divide the target plus the fixed fee by one minus the percentage rate. To keep $100 at 2.9% plus $0.30, charge ($100 plus $0.30) divided by 0.971, which is about $103.30. Switch the calculator to "Gross up to a target" to do this automatically.
Does Stripe charge a fee on refunds?
When you refund a payment, Stripe returns the full amount to the customer, but the original processing fee is not returned to you. That means a refunded charge still costs you the fee you paid. Stripe's pricing page has the current details for your region.
Are Stripe fees different for international or currency-converted payments?
Yes. Stripe adds extra charges for international cards and for currency conversion, and rates vary by country and plan. This calculator uses the standard US online card rate by default. For international, in-person, or currency-conversion pricing, enter your own percentage and fixed fee, or check Stripe's pricing page for the exact current numbers.
