Square takes 1.6% from a card tapped or inserted in person in Australia, with no fixed fee.

Square fee = sale × 1.6%
you keep = sale − Square fee

On an A$100 sale, 1.6% is A$1.60, so you keep A$98.40. Square adds nothing per transaction. Stripe and PayPal both add 30 cents to every card payment in Australia.

Every card brand costs the same 1.6% in person, American Express included.

Square's page says Visa, Mastercard, EFTPOS, JCB and American Express "all cost the same rate" when the card is tapped or inserted. You do not need to know which card a customer used to know the fee. Square's other rates are just as flat: one rate per way of paying.

Online, keyed-in, card on file and invoice payments all cost 2.2%.

Square charges 2.2% whenever the card is not in front of you: a sale on your Square Online site, a payment through the eCommerce API, an invoice paid online, a card typed into Virtual Terminal or a saved card on file. On A$100 that is A$2.20, A$0.60 more than the same sale in person.

Below A$54.55, Square's 2.2% online costs less than Stripe's 1.65% plus 30 cents, and above it Stripe costs less.

With no fixed fee, Square takes the same share of an A$5 sale as of an A$500 one. Stripe's 30 cents weighs heavily on a small payment and hardly at all on a large one, so the cheaper of the two depends on the size of your average sale.

Sellers who joined Square before 30 May 2024 pay 1.9% in person instead of 1.6%.

Square's page says the 1.6% rate is for sellers who signed up on or after 30 May 2024, and 1.9% applies to earlier sellers using Square Reader, Square Stand or Tap to Pay. On A$20,000 a month of in-person card sales, the gap is A$60.00 a month, A$720.00 a year. Pick "In person, joined before 30 May 2024" in the calculator to see the older rate.

Afterpay through Square costs 6% plus 30 cents per transaction, before GST.

Afterpay lets the customer pay in instalments. On an A$100 sale the fee is A$6.30 before GST, nearly four times the in-person card fee, and on A$500 it is A$30.30. Square's page notes that different pricing may apply with certain products and subscription plans.

To receive an exact amount, divide it by what Square's percentage leaves.

amount to charge = amount you want ÷ (1 − Square's percentage)

To keep A$100 from an in-person card sale, charge A$100 ÷ 0.984, which is A$101.63. Online it is A$100 ÷ 0.978, which is A$102.25. With no fixed fee, that is the whole sum.

On an A$100 online payment, PayPal's and Stripe's card rates cost less than Square's 2.2%.

At A$100, Square online costs A$2.20, Stripe on an Australian card A$1.95 and PayPal's advanced card payments A$1.80. A payment from a PayPal account costs the most, A$3.20. On smaller online sales the order turns, because Square has no fixed fee.
