  • $100.00 × 3.3%= $3.30
  • $3.30 + $0.30 per payment= $3.60 fee
  • $100.00 − $3.60= $96.40 you keep

Square Free takes 3.3% plus 30 cents from a card payment made online or through an invoice.

Square fee = payment × percentage + fee per payment
you keep = payment − Square fee

On a $100 payment, 3.3% is $3.30. Adding $0.30 makes $3.60, so you keep $96.40. On Square Plus or Premium the same payment costs $3.20.

Square charges by plan and by how the customer pays.

Square's fee page has one column per plan. The in-person rate falls from 2.6% + 15¢ on Free to 2.4% + 15¢ on Premium, and the online rate from 3.3% + 30¢ to 2.9% + 30¢ on Plus and Premium. The other rates are the same on every plan.

Charging a saved card costs 3.5% plus 15 cents on every Square plan.

Square applies the same rate to "payments when a card number is manually entered or when a saved card on file is used". On a $100 payment that is $3.65, 45 cents more than an online card payment on Plus or Premium. If you charge customers' saved cards each month, this is the rate to plan around.

A card issued outside the US adds 1.5% to the fee.

Square lists an international card transaction fee of 1.5% on all three plans, for "payments made on credit or debit cards issued outside of the United States". A $100 online payment on Square Free becomes 4.8% + 30¢, which is $5.10. Pick "Outside the US" in the calculator to add it.

Square Plus pays for itself on online card payments above $12,250 a month.

Plus costs $49 a month per location and cuts the online rate by 0.4 percentage points. $49 ÷ 0.4% is $12,250, so below that much in online card payments a month the lower rate saves less than the plan costs. In person the cut is smaller, so the volume needed is larger.

Fees only, per location. The paid plans also add features.

Bank transfers on an invoice cost 1%, and only the paid plans cap that fee.

On Square Free an ACH bank transfer on an invoice costs 1%, $1 minimum. On Plus and Premium it is 1%, $1 minimum, $10 cap. A $2,000 invoice paid by bank transfer costs $20.00 on Square Free and $10.00 on Plus or Premium.

To receive an exact amount, add the per-payment fee and divide by what the percentage leaves.

amount to charge = (amount you want + fee per payment) ÷ (1 − percentage)

To keep $100 from an online card payment on Square Free, charge ($100 + $0.30) ÷ (1 − 3.3%), which is $103.72. Square's fee on $103.72 is $3.72, and $100 is left.

Online, Square Plus and Premium match Stripe's standard rate, and Square Free costs 40 cents more on $100.

Stripe's standard US price is 2.9% + 30¢ per successful payment on a domestic card, the same as Square's online rate on Plus and Premium. On a $100 payment that is $3.20, against $3.60 on Square Free and $3.65 for a saved card on Square.
