Stripe takes 1.5% plus 20p from a payment on a standard UK card.

Stripe fee = payment × percentage + 20p
you keep = payment − Stripe fee

On a £100 payment, 1.5% is £1.50. Adding the 20p fixed fee makes £1.70, so you keep £98.30. The fee is 1.70% of the payment.

Stripe prices a UK payment by the kind of card and where it was issued.

Stripe's UK page splits cards issued in the UK into standard cards at 1.5% + 20p and premium cards at 2.8% + 20p. The same £100 costs £1.70 on a standard card and £3.00 on a premium one, £1.30 more. Your customer picks the card, so a business whose buyers carry premium cards pays nearer the higher rate.

Klarna, the buy now, pay later option, starts at 4.99% + 35p, more than three times a standard card on £100.

A card from outside the UK costs more, and a currency conversion adds 2%.

A card from the European Economic Area costs 2.5% + 20p and any other international card 3.15% + 20p. When the payment also has to be converted from another currency, Stripe adds 2%. On a £100 payment, an international card that needs a conversion costs £5.35 in fees, against £1.70 on a standard UK card.

"Converted" adds Stripe's 2% for a currency conversion. Rates read 17 October 2026.

Tick "Currency conversion needed" in the calculator to add it to an EEA or international card.

The fixed 20p makes small card payments the most expensive to take.

The 20p is the same on every payment, so it weighs more on a small one. On a standard UK card a £5 payment loses 5.6% to fees and a £500 payment 1.54%.

The 1.5% stays the same; the 20p does not shrink.

Bacs Direct Debit costs 1%, with a 20p minimum and a £4 cap.

For a subscription, Bacs Direct Debit takes the payment from the customer's bank account. Stripe charges 1% of the payment, at least 20p and at most £4, so the fee stops growing at £400. With 200 customers paying £30 a month, card fees on standard UK cards come to £130.00 a month and Bacs fees to £60.00.

If you bill those subscriptions through Stripe Billing on its pay as you go plan, add 0.7% of Billing volume: £42.00 a month on £6,000.

To receive an exact amount, add the 20p and divide by what the 1.5% leaves.

amount to charge = (amount you want + 20p) ÷ (1 − 1.5%)

To keep £100 from a standard UK card payment, charge (£100 + 20p) ÷ 0.985, which is £101.73. Stripe's fee on £101.73 is £1.73, and £100 is left. Adding 1.5% to £100 is not quite enough, because the percentage is taken from the larger amount.

On a £100 card payment, PayPal's UK card rate costs 20p less than Stripe's, and a PayPal account payment £1.50 more.

PayPal's UK fee page lists 1.2% + 30p for advanced card payments and 2.9% + 30p for a payment from a PayPal account. Stripe's lower fixed fee wins on small payments: below £33.33 a standard UK card costs less on Stripe, and above it PayPal's card rate costs less.
