2.9% + CA$0.30. PayPal's Canadian rates for receiving a payment, from its Canadian Merchant Fees page.
- Your choice: 3.20% of the payment
- The other payment types
- CA$100.00 × 2.9%= CA$2.90
- CA$2.90 + CA$0.30 fixed fee= CA$3.20 fee
- CA$100.00 − CA$3.20= CA$96.80 you keep
- (CA$100.00 + CA$0.30) ÷ (1 − 2.9%)= charge CA$103.30
PayPal takes 2.9% plus 30 cents from a payment made with a PayPal account in Canada.
PayPal fee = payment × 2.9% + CA$0.30
you keep = payment − PayPal fee
PayPal lists this as the rate for "Commercial Transactions": selling goods or services, or asking for money with a request. On a CA$100 payment, 2.9% is CA$2.90. Adding the 30 cent fixed fee makes CA$3.20, so you keep CA$96.80.
A CA$100 PayPal payment from a buyer in Canada
A buyer in the US adds 0.8% to the fee, and a buyer anywhere else adds 1%.
PayPal Canada prices the US apart from the rest of the world. A CA$100 payment from a buyer in the US costs CA$4.00, and from a buyer in the UK or Australia CA$4.20. The 30 cents stays the same; only the percentage rises.

Advanced card payments let a buyer pay by card in your own checkout, once PayPal approves your account. From a US card the rate is 3.5% + CA$0.30, and from any other country 3.7% + CA$0.30. American Express is 3.5% wherever the card is from.
| Payment type | Rate | CA$10 | CA$100 | CA$500 |

QR code payments cost 1.9% plus 10 cents over CA$10, and 2.4% plus 5 cents on CA$10 or less.
A buyer scans your PayPal QR code and pays from their PayPal account, usually in person. The lower fixed fees make QR codes much cheaper than a standard PayPal payment on small sales.

|---|---|---|
| CA$8 | CA$0.24 | CA$0.53 |
| CA$40 | CA$0.86 | CA$1.46 |

PayPal's Canadian page sets 4% as the minimum conversion rate for commercial transactions, in Canadian dollars, US dollars and every other currency. On a payment worth CA$100, 4% is CA$4.00, against a CA$3.20 fee for the sale itself.
Under CA$11.90, PayPal's micropayments rate of 5% plus 5 cents costs less than the standard rate.
PayPal offers micropayments pricing, which you apply for, at 5% + CA$0.05 for buyers in Canada and the US and 6% plus 5 cents elsewhere. Its page suggests it for businesses taking payments under CA$12, and once approved it applies to every payment into the account, so above CA$11.90 it costs more than the standard rate.
| Payment | Standard rate | Micropayments rate |
|---|---|---|
| CA$1 | CA$0.33 | CA$0.10 |
| CA$2 | CA$0.36 | CA$0.15 |
| CA$5 | CA$0.45 | CA$0.30 |
| CA$10 | CA$0.59 | CA$0.55 |
| CA$20 | CA$0.88 | CA$1.05 |
To receive an exact amount, add the 30 cents and divide by what the 2.9% leaves.
amount to charge = (amount you want + CA$0.30) ÷ (1 − 2.9%)
To keep CA$100 from a PayPal account payment, charge (CA$100 + CA$0.30) ÷ 0.971, which is CA$103.30. PayPal's fee on CA$103.30 is CA$3.30, and CA$100 is left.
