Square takes 2.8% plus 30 cents from an online or invoice payment in Canada.

Square fee = payment × 2.8% + CA$0.30
you keep = payment − Square fee

The rate covers Square Online, the eCommerce API, an invoice paid online and Interac debit through Apple Pay or Google Pay online. On a CA$100 payment, 2.8% is CA$2.80. Adding 30 cents makes CA$3.10, so you keep CA$96.90.

In person, a credit card costs 2.5% and an Interac debit card costs 0.75% plus 7 cents.

Visa, Mastercard and American Express credit cards all pay 2.5% when tapped or inserted, with no fixed fee. Interac debit pays 0.75% + CA$0.07 per tap, insert or swipe. On a CA$100 sale that is CA$2.50 by credit card and CA$0.82 by debit.

Keying in a card or charging one on file costs 3.3% plus 15 cents, Square's highest rate in Canada.

Square charges more when the card is not present, and says the extra goes to the card-issuing bank. On CA$100, a keyed-in card or a card on file costs CA$3.45, against CA$3.10 through Square Online and CA$2.50 in person. If you bill regular customers on saved cards, this is the rate to plan around.

A card issued outside Canada adds 1.5% to every credit card payment.

Square adds 1.5% "to transactions made with cards issued outside of Canada", in person and online. A CA$100 online payment from a US visitor's card costs CA$4.60. Pick "Outside Canada" in the calculator to add it.

Rates read 17 October 2026.

Next-business-day deposits are included, and an instant transfer costs 1.95%.

Square pays your sales into your bank account the next business day at no charge. If you need the money sooner, an instant transfer costs 1.95% of the amount moved: CA$19.50 on CA$1,000, more than six times the fee on a CA$100 online sale.

To receive an exact amount, add the fixed fee and divide by what the percentage leaves.

amount to charge = (amount you want + fixed fee) ÷ (1 − percentage)

To keep CA$100 from an online payment, charge (CA$100 + CA$0.30) ÷ 0.972, which is CA$103.19. For a credit card in person there is no fixed fee, so it is CA$100 ÷ 0.975, which is CA$102.56.

Online, Square's 2.8% plus 30 cents costs 10 cents less than Stripe on a CA$100 payment.

Stripe charges 2.9% + CA$0.30 on a Canadian card, the same as a PayPal account payment. PayPal's advanced card payments, at 2.7% + CA$0.30, cost 10 cents less than Square on CA$100.
