PayPal takes 2.9% plus 30 cents from a payment made with a PayPal account in Australia.

PayPal fee = payment × 2.9% + A$0.30
you keep = payment − PayPal fee

PayPal lists this as the rate for "Commercial Transactions": selling goods or services, or asking for money with a request. On an A$100 payment, 2.9% is A$2.90. Adding the 30 cent fixed fee makes A$3.20, so you keep A$96.80.

A buyer outside Australia adds one percentage point to most payments, and 2.1 points to an advanced card payment.

PayPal's page raises the percentage for an international payment and leaves the 30 cents alone. An A$100 PayPal account payment from a buyer in New Zealand or the US costs A$4.20 instead of A$3.20. Advanced card payments rise further, from A$1.80 to A$3.90, so the card discount mostly disappears for a buyer abroad.

Rates read 17 October 2026.

Advanced card payments cost 1.5% plus 30 cents, A$1.40 less than a PayPal account payment on A$100.

Advanced card payments let a buyer pay by card in your own checkout, and PayPal has to approve your account for them. Virtual Terminal, where you key in a card yourself, costs 3.6% + A$0.30, the highest card rate on the page.

QR code payments cost 1.2% with no fixed fee, the lowest rate on PayPal's Australian fee page.

A buyer scans your PayPal QR code and pays from their PayPal account. With no fixed fee the rate is the same on every amount, so an A$100 QR code payment costs A$1.20 and an A$5 one A$0.06. The same A$5 from a PayPal account in an online checkout costs A$0.45.

The 30 cent fixed fee is what makes small online payments expensive.

Under A$11.90, PayPal's micropayments rate of 5% plus 5 cents costs less than the standard rate.

PayPal offers micropayments pricing, which you apply for, at 5% + A$0.05 (6% plus 5 cents from abroad). Its page suggests it for businesses taking payments under A$10, and once approved it applies to every payment into the account, so above A$11.90 it costs more than the standard rate.

To receive an exact amount, add the 30 cents and divide by what the 2.9% leaves.

amount to charge = (amount you want + A$0.30) ÷ (1 − 2.9%)

To keep A$100 from a PayPal account payment, charge (A$100 + A$0.30) ÷ 0.971, which is A$103.30. PayPal's fee on A$103.30 is A$3.30, and A$100 is left.

On an A$100 payment, Stripe's Australian card rate costs A$1.25 less than a PayPal account payment.

Stripe charges 1.65% + A$0.30 on an Australian card, GST included, and Square 2.2% on an online payment. PayPal's own advanced card rate, at A$1.80, is the lowest of the four on A$100.
