Our Basecamp review covers its flat prices and free plan

Most project tools charge for every person you add, so the bill grows with the team. Basecamp now charges for the number of active projects instead, and every plan includes unlimited users. This review covers what Basecamp does, what each plan cost on 16 October 2026 and who it suits.

Basecamp gives every project its own page with the tools it needs.

Basecamp describes itself as "famously straightforward and easy-to-use". Every project gets its own page, and you add the tools that project needs:

• Message Boards for announcements and discussions, in place of email threads.
• To-do lists with assignees, due dates, files and subtasks.
• Hill Charts, which show where each piece of work really stands.
• Card Tables, Basecamp's take on kanban boards.
• Campfire chats for quick conversations inside the project.
• A calendar and Automatic Check-ins, which ask the team questions on a schedule and keep the answers in one place.
• Docs & Files, including cloud files from Figma, Google Docs and Dropbox.
• Client mode, which decides what a client can and cannot see, project by project.

Basecamp 5 is the version for 2026. The paid plans list connectors for ChatGPT and Claude with MCP support, and command-line access for AI agents you run on your own computer.

Basecamp now charges by active projects, not by user.

These were the prices on basecamp.com on 16 October 2026. Every plan includes unlimited users, and archived projects do not count toward the limit.

Paid plans start with a 30-day free trial, and Unlimited with a 45-day trial. On Unlimited, $299 a month billed annually covers unlimited projects and unlimited users.

Jason Fried's team built Basecamp to run its own client work.

Basecamp's About page is written by Jason Fried, a co-founder, who says he has run 37signals, the company that makes Basecamp, for 27 years. 37signals started as a web design firm. It built Basecamp because its own projects were slipping, its clients asked to use it, and about a year after launch Basecamp earned more than the design business, so the firm stopped doing web design.

The pricing page lists 27 profitable years, zero debt, private ownership and 99.99% historical uptime. It also said 1,882 organizations signed up the week before we checked.

Basecamp suits teams that run several projects, often with clients.

Basecamp is worth it for small companies with many people.

For an agency or a startup of 10 or more people, yes. Studio covers 10 active projects for $59 a month, however many people join. A solo founder with one project can start on the free plan and move up only when a second project starts.
